John Lennon came into the latest Beatles business meeting with a proposal for how the band could continue recording past “Abbey Road” which was due to be released in a few weeks.
Of course, Lennon had said a lot of things during these meetings – including once proclaiming himself to be Jesus Christ, so the other Beatles may not have taken him very seriously
And while John would declare that he wanted a “divorce” at the next Beatles meeting on September 20th; for twelve days, there was a new possible future for the band.
Lennon had suggested that he and Paul as well as George, would each get four songs apiece on the next album, while Ringo could have one or two “if he wanted them.”
Could one use this approach and cobble together reasonable approximations of the Beatles output during the 1970s?
Maybe not, but we’re going to have fun trying nonetheless.
But instead of picking just the most famous solo songs…
… or the ones that sound the most “Beatle-y”…
… or our personal favorites…
Each episode Kate Manning from Break Rock Down and Scot Livingston from Detours & Outliers are going to go head-to-head and see who can create the best playlist of post-Beatles material.
Each one taking turns removing a track from the list of available songs and adding them to our roster until we both have four John…
Four George…
Four Paul…
And one or two Ringo tunes.
Then we will come back together the next week and see whose playlist ends up having the biggest percentage increase in Spotify plays, thereby deciding a winner for the week.
Not that this is a competition as much as it’s an excuse to dig into and discuss the discographies of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr.
So join us won’t you for the Seventies Beatles’ “Beatles Fantasy Draft”.
